Threads is Meta\u2019s answer to Twitter \u2014 a place to share text, image, and video with friends and followers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For more than a decade, Twitter has been an important tool for campaigns, advocacy groups, news and media, and for niche community groups \u2014 to build, organize, and spread ideas across the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the last few months have been tough on Twitter. Instability on the platform, controversial political takes from owner Elon Musk, and abrupt changes in the platform’s policies (sometimes several a day), have caused advertisers to flee, hate speech to rise, and progressives to boycott the platform and look seriously for an alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Launched in early July, Threads is the latest attempt to replace Twitter, and it’s very similar \u2014 in theory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can post the same type of content, and the user base quickly exploded thanks to integration with Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Threads gained 100 million users in just five days \u2014 surpassing Pok\u00e9mon Go and making it the fastest growing app of all time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But we\u2019ve also seen reports that Threads engagement has already started to fall \u2014 losing daily users and time spent on app<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s why Threads is not a Twitter replacement \u2014 yet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twitter is a useful app because it allows users to easily discover and engage with new communities \u2014 something missing from Threads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are no hashtags, no trending topics, no keywords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no web or desktop interface yet \u2014 meaning conversations only happen in app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the newsfeed for most users is littered with content from influencers, athletes, and celebrities \u2014 the amount of relevant content I see on Threads right now is almost zero, even though I\u2019ve done my best to follow people in the communities I\u2019m interested in hearing from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Threads has a lot going for it, and could easily build these features.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike Twitter, Threads seems to just \u2018work\u2019 all the time \u2014 the next time there\u2019s a Twitter outage, don\u2019t be surprised to see a huge flurry of activity on Threads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Threads also has the benefit of direct integration with Instagram. Twitter was very much geared towards the \u2018very online\u2019 crowd \u2014 people who wanted to connect with other like minded people, or people with a perspective to share. Threads will involve a much broader audience \u2014 which could be great news for content creators and advertisers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, if Threads can\u2019t match Twitter\u2019s functionality soon \u2014 content creators may give up.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are already so many social media platforms and you can\u2019t be everywhere at once. Especially with no easy-to-use desktop platform, content creators may quickly give up on Threads if they are not seeing the same engagement they get elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So it remains to be seen if Meta is up to the task. Can they deliver updates that match or exceed the community building capabilities of Twitter?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or will users get bored quickly and move on before these changes happen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of today, we\u2019re not telling our clients to invest much time and energy into Threads. But that could easily change.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We do recommend you reserve your username, set up a profile, and introduce yourself \u2014 and be ready to do more if Threads continues to grow and develop useful features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But for the time being, we\u2019re mostly sticking to Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
